Solar Energy

Solar energy is energy collected from the sun. The most popular way to collect this energy is with photovoltaic cells, which comprise solar panels. The process of photovoltaic cells is a lot like photosynthesis. Just like plants use photosynthesis to convert sunlight into chemical energy, or ATP, we use solar panels to convert sunlight into energy for our electronic appliances. When sunlight warms the cells, electrons in the cell’s atoms are knocked loose. Once the electrons are loose, they travel through the cell and generate electricity. The electricity is then passed through a cable running into the campus and eventually reaches any electrical devices plugged into the outlets. Solar energy is perhaps the most efficient and environmentally friendly energy source available. According to National Geographic, “Solar energy is lauded as an inexhaustible fuel source that is pollution and often noise free.” That is, solar energy is often praised as a longstanding and clean fuel source. NCC utilizes this highly regarded energy source to generate its own electricity, sometimes generating enough to give power back to the community.
